Your first visit to a shooting range does not require previous experience or prior knowledge of firearms. What matters most is calm instruction, clear safety rules and a pace suited to someone who is just getting started.
Your first time at a shooting range does not have to be stressful
People visiting a range for the first time usually have the same questions: do I need to know how a firearm works, what should I wear, which commands do I need to follow and will my lack of experience be a problem? The answer is simple: during properly organised training, the instructor is there to structure those first minutes and guide you from the safety briefing into calm, conscious practice.
At On Target, beginner training assumes no previous knowledge. Instead of sending a new participant straight into practical exercises, we begin with the rules, behaviour on the firing line and an explanation of how the session will run. If this is the kind of introduction you are looking for, see the On Target shooting training offer.
What should you bring for your first visit?
The most important things are a relaxed attitude and a willingness to listen to the instructor. Organisational details should be confirmed when booking, as they may depend on the venue and the type of session. In practice, comfortable clothing, closed footwear and clothes that do not restrict movement are a sensible choice.
- arrive a few minutes early so the session does not begin in a rush,
- wear stable, comfortable footwear,
- avoid loose clothing that may get in the way during exercises,
- if you wear prescription glasses or hearing aids, mention this before the session,
- do not try to memorise the operation of a particular firearm from random online videos.
How does the training session begin?
First, the instructor learns about the participant's experience and expectations. A person who has never been shooting before needs a different introduction from someone returning after a long break. The next step is a safety briefing, range commands and an explanation of the structure of the session.
Only when the participant knows what to expect and how to react to instructions does the practical part begin. This order reduces stress and makes it easier to focus on learning instead of guessing what to do next.
Is the first shot difficult?
For many people, the biggest surprise is not the firearm itself but the sound and the intensity of a new environment. Hearing and eye protection are standard elements of safe training. The instructor sets the pace so that the participant has time to become comfortable with the conditions and does not feel pressured into rushed movements.
Your first hits do not need to be perfect. The first session is mainly about building safe habits and understanding the basics. Better results on the target come later.
The most common beginner mistake: rushing
A beginner often wants to get to the “real shooting” as quickly as possible. Good training, however, starts with consistency and calm execution. Every instruction should be understood and every stage completed without unnecessary haste.
If something is unclear, ask. At a shooting range, asking a question is a sign of responsibility, not a lack of knowledge. Safety is more important than speed.
Do you need your own firearm or a licence?
A person attending beginner training does not need to own a firearm or have previous sporting experience. The exact participation rules and organisation of the session are agreed before the booking. If you are starting from zero, simply say so when you contact us.
This is why the On Target offer is divided by level and purpose. You can progress from your first contact with shooting to regular training without skipping the foundations. You can also read our guide on how to choose shooting training for your skill level.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to practise before my first visit?
No. The purpose of a first training session is to take you safely through the basics with an instructor. Previous experience can help, but it is not required for beginner training.
Does a first visit mean strong recoil straight away?
No. There is no reason to start with the most demanding experience. The pace and scope of training should match the participant, and the first minutes are used to become familiar with the environment, the sound and the rules.
Can two people come together?
Yes. When booking, it is worth giving the number of participants straight away. The instructor can then plan the session so that each person has enough time and receives a calm introduction.
What should I say when booking?
Simply say that it is your first time, give the number of participants and your preferred date. If you have a specific goal or concern, include it as well. This helps us tailor the training.
